Shame is a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behaviour. No matter who we are, we’ve all been confronted to shame at least once. Remember that time you fell before your entire class in middle school ? Or a little less funny, when that guy made a comment on your clothes or appearance and all the people around you started to laugh ?
Yes, shame is part of our daily lives, it is not necessarily a bad thing because I believe sometimes it teaches you how to be stronger, and sometimes even if you’re not proud of something it can be funny.
But most of the time shaming someone isn’t nice and doesn’t come from a good intention. There are several types of shaming : religion, ethnicity, handicap, body type, gender, sexuality, online… It is based on your differences and almost always causes harms to the person who is victim of it.
Today we’re going to be more specific on the topic of shaming LGBT community. Nowadays, it is one of the biggest issues in society because of the different opinions. Some think LGBT community should have exactly the same rights as heterosexual. But, according to others it is a « shame » and against nature to love the same sex. This way of thinking can be linked to religion, culture or education. And so, in certain families it is strictly forbidden. Too many times, we hear about terrible dramas in the news caused by a coming out leading to murder or abuse.
Let’s think about that for a minute. In an heterosexual relationship, you don’t choose to love your neighbor, your friend or your colleague. It happens because you start to feel that you are interested in them in a sentimental way. Being homosexual isn’t a choice, just like I said, you don't choose who you love. And trying to suppress such strong emotions can be very traumatising.
How do you cope loving someone and your entire family being against it and blaming you ? Or being harassed in school because of it ?
If you look up on the internet, the number of cases of self harm, attempt to suicide or mental illness is very high for members of the LGBT community.
Being considered less important or stupid because of you love or who you choose to be can ruin your life and not finding support in anyone can destroy you.
It is important to learn from others and to live in a society which desires to progress and to better herself, but in order to do that everyone needs to be open minded and to listen to one another. We can all agree that every child deserves to have a beautiful life. Wouldn’t want you that for your baby ?
So let your children become who they want to be and fall in love with whoever they want. Treat well each person you meet and let them know you are here for them in case they need support, because you never know what anybody is going through.
